Red Tape Challenge
The current Government is committed to reducing Red Tape, unnecessary regulations which prevent business and commerce from reaching its full potential. On 22nd April, it announced that all environmental legislation was the next category to be considered.
Details of the affected legislation can be found on the Red Tape Challenge website under Biodiversity, wildlife management, landscape, countryside and recreation.
DEFRA has responded to say that it is not the intention to scrap the legislation, but to streamline it where it would be appropriate to do so.
All species of bat in the UK are protected by European obligations so the laws protecting them cannot be unilaterally withdrawn by the UK Government. The same cannot be true of other protected species.
